Self-care: an exploration

IMG_3378 - Version 2Self-care. What is that? What is it to you? I’ve been asking my patients recently what they believe they do for self-care and most of them answer that they eat a healthy diet and exercise. This, to me, is the most basic form of self-care that helps us to survive like the other basic necessities of life; sleeping and breathing. Maybe that seems unusual to you, but in the big scheme of things, these basics are not going to propel us into the people that we are ultimately wanting to be.

So, self-care…these practices help us to maintain a healthy, balanced, centered and grounded existence through all of life’s ups and downs. What do I do? I have many things in my bag of tricks. I find that I need more and more as I get older and have more responsibilities and life demands. I need a lot of different kinds of ways to express and release and most importantly, feel joy. One of my favorite things to do is dance. I dance by myself and in community. I also play guitar and piano, sing and write songs. I need nature. I go for long hikes, walks on the beach and swim in the ocean. I sit with friends and share stories about my life while listening to their journey and we cry and laugh together. I receive many forms of healing modalities: naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, massage, energy work, contrast hydrotherapy, and shamanic healing. And I have quality alone time, meditating, praying, journaling and visioning goals for all aspects of my life.

Now its your turn. What do you do? What do you miss doing? What do you feel you need to do but just haven’t had the motivation for it? Comment below! I would love to hear about it and maybe we can find a way to make it happen! Start a new type of self-care today and see what it opens up to you and how it may bring joy into your heart. Take the time to nourish yourself and watch as it expands out into everything you do.

I will be continuing this blog about self-care as a series with other members of the Well Being Team and your comments below will be addressed as we go. Looking forward to taking this journey together!
Blessings to you,
